The oldest working lighthouse in the United States, this lighthouse was built on June 11, 1764 - dozens of years before the Declaration of Independence. This was the fifth lighthouse in the colonies.
This is also the first lighthouse in the country to be lit by electric incandescent lamps in 1889. The lighthouse is located on the northern end of Sandy Hook.
The keepers building seen here was built in 1883, replacing an old dwelling on the site
The 1000 watt bulb in the Fresnel lens emits 45,000 candle-power light and is visible 19 miles at sea.
